VDD project was born in 2007 from the degree thesis of Flavio Bertini, student of Master degree at the Department of Computer Science (DIS), University of Rome "La Sapienza". Davide Lamanna, research assistant at DIS, proposed and supervised Flavio's thesis together with Prof. Roberto Baldoni. After the degree, Davide and Flavio decided to keep on going with the project. They decided to set up a small testbed in a DIS lab, supervised by Prof. Baldoni. In 2008 Salvatore Cristofaro, student in the same university, joined VDD Project for his final degree stage. Salvatore brought a large contribution to VDD. He set up the lab completely, introduced Xen virtualization system and studied several possibilities to speed up the whole system.

In year 2009, Davide, Flavio and Salvatore asked Binario Etico, a social enterprise based in Rome and working on Free Software and reuse of obsolete PCs, to host the project and continue the development. A project financed by NLnet foundation started, with the aim of introducing new features to the system and developing graphical interfaces for clients and servers.
